BP STEM CAREERS DAY

On 20th November, BP invited 120 Year 8 students to their Campus in Sunbury. The focus of the day was to develop a better understanding of the different possible careers that are available at BP; the day also involved team work and problem solving.

The morning consisted of finding out why drones are being designed with protective casings, how the design of boats has changed to be pirate-proof, what incidents may occur with these boats and how electron microscopes, fibre optic cables, sound waves, engineering and geology play a role in the company. We also learned about oil rigs that look like boats.

In the afternoon, the students worked in different teams to design the cheapest oil rig that would take the most weight without collapsing. The students on the winning team were: Jess Ray, Sophie Walden, Honor James, Michelle Phillips, Joel Brewer and George Peaty.  The students on the runners-up team were: Ellie Baxter, Ayden Smoker-Boswell, Arupa Thakar, Oliver Goodenough, Khenza Yazid, Ellie Redfern and Charlotte George.

Both teams were presented with glass trophies, which can be seen on display in cabinets in the student reception.
