STEAMED ROCKS

We have recently launched STEAMED Rocks here at Sunbury Manor School.  This is a virtual club for students in year 7, 8 and 9 with weekly webinars and mini challenges.  Every week, STEAMED broadcasts interviews with influencers and innovators from the world of science, tech and digital media which is shown every Thursday in ICT 3 at 3.15pm.  Students are encouraged to submit questions to the innovator and are then given some tasks and a mini challenge related to the topic for the week.  Each week the mini challenge submissions are sent to STEAMED as part of a larger competition, as well as a Sunbury Manor School winner also being chosen.

Our first week saw an interview with Hollie Patterson who is a Video Games Community Officer.  Students listened carefully to Hollie talking about her job role and were then asked to redesign a chess game using Artificial Intelligence, this was the first mini challenge.  Congratulations to Oliver Mason in year 7 who was the STEAMED winner for his game design beating off competition from a range of other schools and clubs participating in the STEAMED challenge.

The second week proved a hit with our year 7 students who were very interested in wearable technology.  The interview was with Barry Ryan, Marketing Manager of  8kflexwarm.com.  This company have developed a 'smart coat' which can heat up depending on the temperature outside.  For the challenge students were asked to design a piece of wearable technology that was part of their school uniform or equipment brought to school every day.  Unfortunately there were no STEAMED winners but a Sunbury Manor winner has been chosen and will be announced soon in assembly.  Well done to everyone who entered, there were lots of incredible ideas and to choose one winner was really very difficult.

STEAMED will be running every Thursday in ICT3 at 3.15pm.  Students can find all the information about the topics and competitions on their email.
