Year 9 Girls Football - District Champions

On Wednesday 1st December, the Year 9 girls’ football team played in a 7-a-side tournament at Matthew Arnold. We went into the tournament with a positive mindset, finding out we were to play Thamesmead, St Paul’s, and Magna Carta.

The first game against Thamesmead ended 0-0, despite many attempts to get a goal, but unfortunately none of them hit the back of the net. Regardless of our result, we carried on positively into the next game against Magna Carta, which we won 2-0 thanks to some great shots by Albanie Barrett and Demi-Leigh Willis, as well as some great saves by Sadie O’Neill, ensuring we kept a clean sheet.

We were placed 2nd in our group, which meant we had to play St Paul’s in the semi-final. It was the most difficult game yet; the score was 2-1 to St Paul’s but we did not give up until the end. In the final minutes of the second half, Jasmine Mansell scored an amazing goal from the half way line, which stunned everyone on the pitch. This meant that we were still in the game, with extra time helping us secure our win with Albanie Barrett scoring in the last moments of the game.

This led us to the final, which was against Magna Carta. We were determined to win; as we had come so far, we were not ready to give it up. It was a tense game, both sides playing to their best ability. The game went into extra time and the score was still even, which meant our fate was decided by a penalty shootout.

The tension rapidly increased; everyone stood watching hoping for it to go their way. A few shots were missed, but we persevered and Demi-Leigh stepped up to be in goal and saved many shots by Magna Carta. The penalty score was even once more, which meant sudden death. After Magna Carta missed another shot, Jasmine Mansell bravely stepped up to take what we hoped would be the penalty that meant we won. She smashed the ball into the bottom-left corner of the goal and we all celebrated. We had won the tournament! We collected our medals with pride after all the hard work that had gone into the great result; well done girls!

This would not have been possible without the whole team effort: well done to Polly Dimitrova, Jasmine Mansell, Albanie Barrett, Demi-Leigh Willis, Beau Curran, Katie Powlson and Sadie O’Neill.
