YOUNG SCIENTIST CHALLENGE

Sunbury Manor School were delighted to be invited to the BP Young Scientist Challenge. We took two teams of Year 8 & 9 students to compete against teams from eight schools from across London and Surrey. After a briefing about BP as a company, we were set the task of building the supporting structure (jacket) for an oilrig, but planning was key, as we had to work within a budget. We had to decide how many cups, straws, pieces of wooden dowling and sellotape we required, as it was only the five most economical structures that would go through to the next round. Teamwork, design ideas and maths skills were key!

Although we had over an hour to build our structure, the time flew, as we were all busy helping and offering advice. As well as prizes being awarded for the cheapest design that held the most weight, BP also gave prizes for ‘best design’ and ‘most effective teamwork’. Sunbury Manor School didn’t win any prizes this time, but we have asked to be invited again next year, so who knows?” Well done to all the students who took part.
