Posted on: 6/01/2020YOUTH SPEAKS 2019On Thursday 7th November, Sunbury Manor successfully defended their title at the 2019 Youth Speaks Junior Competition. This year, there was a slight change. The intermediate and senior competition was split (the senior competition took place on 21st November) and Youth Speaks changed to Youth Debates with teams having to argue, between themselves, for and against a topic they feel strongly about. In the lead up to the competition, the team worked incredibly hard, giving up most lunchtimes to rehearse their arguments. On the night, there were four other teams present as well as members of the Rotary Club, three judges and The Mayor of Spelthorne – quite an intimidating audience for Harish, Amelia and Rebekah to face! The Sunbury Manor Intermediate Team were first to speak and were outstanding - they definitely set a high standard for other teams to follow! Harish (the chairperson) was engaging, entertaining and successfully controlled the debate between Amelia (the proposer) and Rebekah (the opposer) who shared very different ideas about whether it is smart for teenagers to own a smart phone. Both Amelia and Rebekah spoke with such passion that it was difficult to pick a side of the argument to agree with! It was brilliant to see Harish, Amelia and Rebekah’s hard work rewarded. As winners, they are through to the next round of the competition. After a tremendous show at the Youth Speaks Senior auditions, we chose three fantastic speakers, Fred Smith (chairperson), Callum Gibbons (proposer) and Nada Koulaouzos (opposer). The chosen topic was whether prison should be punitive or should it rehabilitate prisoners. Strong performances were delivered by all the team, Fred narrowly missing out on winning the chair award by two marks and Nada was just pipped to the post by one point for best speaker. The event was held in Spelthorne County Hall and many local dignities were present, including members of the Rotary Club and the Madame Mayor. The students put in an incredible amount of work and felt that this was a very worthwhile project to get involved with as it improved their team skills and their use of spoken English language. Well done to you all.
Posted on: 25/11/2019SKY ACADEMY STUDIOSThroughout this half term many of our new Year 7s have had the opportunity to visit Sky Academy Studios in Isleworth to experience life as News Reporters. It gave them a unique and innovative way to bring the curriculum to life, as they worked together with talented professional studio staff in a bespoke TV studio to create their own news report. With the help of the expert team at Sky, students learnt about how to structure the news report and communicate their ideas to the audience. These trips covered many inspiring topics including: Social Networking & Healthy Living, Celebrity Culture, Future – Oceans & Plastic Pollution, Do Animals Matter and Space Travel. “My experience at Sky Studios was not only fun and entertaining, but also educational and engaged me to learn in a way that I found new, exciting and very beneficial. Sky Studios also allowed us to exercise our teamwork and communication skills as we worked together.” Reported by Amelia Joseph-Berry. “The Sky Studios experience was absolutely amazing, one of the best experiences of my life. After a short tour we got into our groups and thought about our script and our backdrops and even if we wanted a voice-over. We then went to the dressing room and got ready for the filming and editing. When we had finish we watched it back as a whole group. Unfortunately, it was then time to go, but we were given a souvenir of a USB stick to plug into a laptop and watch at home, which I did with my family.” Reported by Sophie Cuthbertson “Going to the Sky Studios was a once-in-a life time experience. The Sky building was massive and the inside was beautiful and majestic. As well as making our own news report about social media we got to see some costumes from some movies, such as: Spiderman Home Coming and Bain’s suit from Batman.” Reported by Ali Naqvi

During the day, we got to meet different celebrities (some who we knew and some who were new to us) and spent the day watching them play golf. We got the chance to meet loads of different celebrities including: Harry Redknapp, Jamie Redknapp, Chris Hughes, Bradley Will Simpson, Ben Stokes, Niall Horan and lots more! As well as this, we got to look around and see all of the dream houses we would wish to own one day! We got to go around shops and play around with virtual reality equipment. Many amazing memories were made on this day that will never be forgotten. Thank you, Mrs Keith and Mr Parcel.” Written by Lilly Maddox and Sophie Walden.

Posted on: 25/10/2019FYI - NEWS BY KIDS FOR KIDSOn Friday 18th October, twelve students from Year 8 and 9 were interviewed by Sky News for ‘FYI’, a news programme directed at young people. FYI is presented entirely by kids and aims to answer big questions about current affairs and politics. Our students: Harmony Murray, Grace Turner, Jessica Cloake, Sam West, Ben Street, Harish Balasingam, Megan Neall, Oliver Bryant, Zoe Lewis, Ethan Freeman, Briony Anthony and Cameron Lackie, were put into pairs and asked their opinions about ‘racism in football’ and climate change protestors ‘Extinction Rebellion’. Some very interesting debates came from their discussions which you can see once it is aired next month.
