BEBRAS

During the week of 5th November, our Year 8 and Year 9 students undertook the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge during their Computing lessons.  Available in over 40 countries, the Bebras challenges are made of a set of short problems called Bebras tasks and are delivered through an interactive website.  The tasks are fun, engaging and based on problems that Computer Scientists often come across and enjoy solving.  The tasks can be solved without any prior knowledge but instead require logical thinking.  The aim is to solve as many as possible in the time given.  We are incredibly proud of all of the students who took part and many Certificates of Merit and Distinction have been handed out as well as a Certificate for the highest achiever in each year group. A special mention must go to the students below, who scored in the top 10% of the country for their age range.  This incredible achievement means they receive an invitation to the TCS Oxford Computing Challenge.  This invitation-only event will be held in March 2019 and aims to help talented computational thinkers develop their skills by asking them to solve tasks with programmed solutions.   A huge well done to the students below who will be receiving their invitations: Nikodem Kulakowski, Harvey Lewis, Sophie Kirkby-Toms, Megan Stewart, Rory Edwards, Troy Murray, Annabella Kingdon, Jack Macalister, Jacob Glover, Dino Suljic, Sarah Bentaleb, Carys Taylor, Cameron Booth-Downs and Leah Doore.

YEAR 7 GIRLS FOOTBALL TRIUMPH

“On 6th November, we played in a football tournament at Matthew Arnold School against other schools in the area. We focused on our game plan and from the outset executed this with energy. Most of the action was in the opposition half, which represented us as a stronger team giving our goalkeeper, Caitlin, time to rest, as she was challenged on a few occasions despite us being the stronger side overall. There was no passing through our defense with credit going largely to Katie and Emma, with great dribbling skills from Olivia and Lucia. We drew against Thamesmead and won against St Pauls and Bishop Wand, where I managed to score in both games. With all the girls cooperating with each other we zoomed through to the semi-final where we played against Magna Carter School. Again, we were full of energy from the word "go". I scored two goals thanks to great passes from Lilly and Lucia. The opposition however, managed to score despite Caitlin’s great efforts. The final score was 2-1, which meant we were through to the final. In the final, we played the host, Matthew Arnold School. We were determined to win but our opponents did not let us rest, it was full steam on from both teams. All the girls kept their feet on the gas in what was a tense 8 minutes. Olivia scored the first goal and I followed with the second goal just 90 seconds before the end. The final score was 2-0 and we claimed the victory. We won the tournament making Sunbury Manor proud and undefeated!” Reported by Sigourney Dawson A huge congratulations to the team: Caitlin Cummings, Katie High, Olivia Constable, Sigourney Dawson, Lilly Maddox, Emma Ireland, Lucia Donnelly and Elle Payne.
