CELEBRATING SUCCESS

Sunbury Manor’s Celebration of Achievement Evening took place on Thursday 27th April in the main school hall.  Attended by approximately 200 people, it was a sparkling evening full of smiles and celebrations as the teachers read out citations about each student, sometimes with humour, sometimes with emotion, but always with pride and mutual respect.  Presenting the awards was our honoured guest, Mr Mike Gicquel, President of The Rotary Club and Mrs Louise Hirst, Chair of Governors.

Over 50 students received awards throughout the school. As well as academic awards there were a range of individual awards.  One very special award went to Alfie Ward of Year 10, who received the ‘Angela Hopkins Award for Endeavour’ for his courage in the face of adversity.  Alfie was diagnosed with high risk neuroblastoma, a form of cancer that forms in nerve tissue, when he was just 5-years-old.  He has had eight rounds of chemotherapy and has relapsed twice after going into remission.

The ‘Governors’ Cup’ was awarded to the whole of year 10 for their love, generosity and support shown towards Alfie. Miss Grice, Head of Year 10, said “As the news and the extent of Alfie's treatment broke, I had an endless stream of year 10 students knocking on my door to see what they could do to raise some money. Every time I leave my office, I hear a new idea or fundraising suggestion. Whether it's been an Easter egg donation, donating their birthday money or shaving their hair, they really will go to any lengths to raise some money. I am so overwhelmed and touched by the generosity of my year group. Well done Year 10.”
