DNA WORKSHOP

On 30th March, 30 Year 9s were lucky enough to attend a DNA Workshop in school, run by the University of Surrey.

The mentors began the workshop by checking the students’ confidence levels in their understanding of DNA.   Following this, they created DNA models using various sweets, before completing a very technical procedure to extract DNA from strawberries – all pupils achieved excellent results. In addition, they learned how our DNA compares with other organisms.  To end this very interesting workshop the mentors once again checked the students’ understanding of DNA; I was extremely pleased to see that these levels had improved.

This bodes tremendously well for their Year 9 summer exams!  Thank you to the University of Surrey for this excellent workshop, which the students thoroughly enjoyed.
