Induction Days

New Intake Tea Party

We are very aware that Year 6 pupils face a big change when they transfer to Year 7 and we do everything possible to make that transition a positive experience for our students.

At the end of June we hold a ‘New Intake Tea Party’ for those joining us from a school with only one, two or three other children and we therefore have and informal get together at Sunbury Manor.  Students have the opportunity to meet some of the other students due to start in September, and get to know them a little by participating in a group activity.  This will mean that there should be a few familiar faces when they attend the Induction Days at the start of July.  The Head of Year 7 attends this event, along with other members of staff and refreshments are provided for parents and students, this year, the cakes were quite a talking point!

New Year 7 Parents’ Evening

At the start of July we offer parents the opportunity to meet with staff, prior to their child’s Induction Days, so that we can introduce ourselves and give helpful information about communication with the school. Yr7 Tutors are available on the evening so that parents can put a name to a face ready for when students come home and share their Induction Day experiences.

On the evening there is an overview of:

INSIGHT - this is the way the majority of communication between home and school is done.  We demonstrate INSIGHT and the following facilities:

  • Your child’s timetable and details of attendance.
  • Your child’s behaviour (positive and negative).
  • Your personal contact details and how to update them when you change phone numbers or move house.
  • How to contact your child’s teachers.
  • How to report absence or request a holiday during term time.
  • How detentions are issued and the reasons for them.
  • Assessments - how your child is doing, including interim and annual reports.
  • What your child is buying for their school lunch and how much credit they have left.
  • Diary dates/ inset days/ term dates.
  • Online booking for parents’ evening.
  • Letters from school.
  • Newsletters.

Our Uniform Suppliers, SANCO in Hounslow, and SECA (South East Creative Arts, who provide one to one instrumental lessons) will be present on the evening for any questions parents may have.

Induction Days

As a part of our induction programme for new students, we invite them to spend two days with us at the start of July so that they can get to know some of their new teachers and classmates prior to September.  They will meet their tutors and tutor group, tour the school, enjoy a new dining experience and sit the CAT4 tests, which will help set them in the most appropriate academic group for their ability.  This is always an interesting and enjoyable experience and their visit helps to allay the anxiety that, we know, many youngsters feel when contemplating the move to a new school.  Here’s what some students had to say about the day:

The teachers are really helpful and guide me if I am having difficulties.  I have made many nice friends.

I loved the art, sweet prizes, learning a new language, coming to tutor time, tour of the school, meeting new people… everything!

Meeting loads of new friends and having a range of teachers with fresh ideas.

My teachers because they let everyone speak and contribute in all of the lessons.
